The Namakwa SEZ is a planned special economic zone that will be located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The SEZ will bolster industrial development in this region and enhance beneficiation of the region’s natural mineral resources. The Namakwa SEZ will be located adjacent to the town of Aggeneys, in the Namakwa District Municipality. The SEZ is expected to create jobs, boost economic growth and attract foreign investment to the Northern Cape. The anchor project of the Namakwa SEZ will be the Gamsberg Zinc Opencast Mine and the proposed Gamsberg Zinc Smelter that will process the zinc concentrate from the mine and produce zinc metal and by-products such as sulphuric acid. The smelter will create jobs, add value to the raw materials, reduce transport costs and carbon emissions. It is envisaged that the Namakwa SEZ will also attract downstream industries which will diversify the economic base of the region and create further employment and skills development opportunities.
Jinyela (Pty) Ltd were appointed to undertake the Roads Master Plan as part of the Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) for the proposed SEZ. This Roads Master Plan will essentially be a workable long-term plan for the development of the road network for this region. This TIA will influence many aspects of the proposed development of this region and will help guide the region’s transportation and land use decisions for the next decade and beyond. Moreover, this TIA will provide a statistically reliable platform to inform all future road network planning for the proposed land developments within the study area.
