REDEVELOPMENT OF THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SHOWGROUNDS

The applicant, VU-TACT Trade and Invest (Pty) Limited intend to redevelop Royal Agricultural Showgrounds (RAS) in Pietermaritzburg, located within the Msunduzi Municipality, in KwaZulu Natal. The RAS site is an iconic landmark located within the city of Pietermaritzburg. This famous site has been in use since 1902 as the Royal Showgrounds. The site has served the RAS well for over a century. However, the current times and trends have changed the approach that the RAS uses to deliver its mandate. Nowadays, it is no longer viable or possible to transport livestock to Pietermaritzburg by train. Similarly, driving cattle trucks through congested Pietermaritzburg streets is no longer a desirable option. Therefore, after 120 years the RAS has decided to decentralise their operations from central Pietermaritzburg and move their activities closer to the agricultural heartlands. It is against this backdrop that the applicant has acquired the site and intends to the redevelop the site into a vibrant node of economic activity.

As mentioned above, this TIA has been prepared in support of the Rezoning Application and the EIA Application for the subject property. The planning for the redevelopment of Royal Agricultural Showgrounds site is still at a conceptual stage. Hence, the ultimate development scheme is not showcased here until the final development scheme is publicized.
